Range volume profile on NinjaTrader 8
Draw a box over the bars you care about and see where volume traded inside it, side by side with delta.
Setting names are shown in English because that is how they appear in NinjaTrader.
Drawing a box
Click the Range profile button at the top of the chart's left button column, then draw a box over any stretch of the chart the way you draw any NinjaTrader rectangle. OrderVane builds a volume profile for exactly that range from its own tick data and draws it immediately.
- While you draw the box, and while you drag its left or right edge, its top and bottom follow the highest high and lowest low of the bars inside. Hold Shift to place them yourself.
- Moving the whole box, or dragging its top or bottom edge, keeps the prices you give it.
- The profile follows the box: move or resize it and the numbers rebuild.
The box is a NinjaTrader drawing tool (listed as OrderVane Range Profile), so NinjaTrader handles selecting, moving, deleting and saving it with the workspace.
Two sides, two sources
Each side of the box can show a different source, which is what makes a range profile more than one histogram:
| Source | What a bar means |
|---|---|
| Volume | Everything that traded at that price |
| Delta | Buy minus sell at that price |
| Buy / Sell | One side only |
| TPO | How many time periods price spent there |
By default the left side shows delta (with a TPO outline) and the right side shows volume. The butterfly shape that results makes it easy to see where size traded without a clear direction.
The chips under a box
Select, hover or click a box and a row of chips appears under it:
LandR— the source for each side;L+andR+— extra sources drawn as outlines on top.VA— the value area and its percentage (68 by default),POC, andVWAP(a VWAP line that develops across the box).- The row grouping in ticks (such as
1t),LVN(low-volume bands),T/s(a speed strip down the box's right edge),Mag(snaps the corners to bars when you release the box) and a red cross that deletes the box.
The first time you change a chip on a box, that box keeps its own settings from then on. A small handle on the top edge of a selected box changes how far the bars extend into it.
Comparing boxes
By default every box on the chart shares one scale (Range profile common scale across boxes), so a busy hour draws visibly larger bars than a quiet one. A box over bars that the tick history does not cover reads no tick history in this range.
The previous session's profile drawn by the session levels is an automatic box of the same kind; see previous day value area.
Common questions
Is this the same as NinjaTrader's own volume profile?
It is a separate drawing tool from OrderVane NT Pro, built from the tick data it requests itself, with two sources side by side and per-box settings.
Can each box have different settings?
Yes. Change a chip on a box and that box keeps its own settings; the others are unaffected.
Does it work on any bar type?
Yes. The profile adds up the tick data of the chart bars inside the box, so it works on time, tick, range or Renko bars. The TPO source counts chart bars, so its shape changes with the bar type. The instrument needs time & sales data.
